Pinot
Noir from The Southern Hemisphere, April 24, 2003
With James Nevison of HalfaGlass |
 |
What
do Pinot Noirs from Australia, New Zealand, Chile and South
Africa have in common? How do they differ? Can any be compared
with great Burgundy? Come find out on April 24 when we taste
some top examples from each of these countries in the first
ever Southern Hemisphere Pinot Noir taste-off in Vancouver.
No-one has ever done a tasting quite like this here. We
have sourced prime examples from each of the serious Southern
Hemisphere pinot producing countries, and will seek to identify
common traits and differences.
|
From
Australia we have two samples made in Victoria, reputedly
home of that country's most refined pinots, while New Zealand
is represented by premium Marlborough and Hawkes Bay samples.
From Chile we will taste reserve pinots from two top wineries:
Valdivieso and Carmen, and South Africa will be represented
by its highest-rated pinot producers: Hamilton Russell and
Bouchard Finlayson. Pinot Noir lovers will find this a fascinating
journey of exploration into the world of this great wine.
For newcomers to pinot noir this will be a revelation of the
diversity, range and charm of the famed 'heartbreak grape'.
Our
speaker is James Nevison, of Halfaglass, co-founder of a funky,
hip company dedicated to promoting wine and wine education
to the young wine drinking crowd - calling all 19-30 year
olds! James will bring a unique perspective to our tasting
event and is sure to entertain.
Don't
miss out your chance to develop your own palate for Pinot
Noir accompanied by delicious appetizers from Seasons Restaurant.
Space is limited so please register early. |

Super
Premium Wines from Chile & Argentina, May 21, 2003
With Paul Watkin
|

Finca
Flichman, Argentina |
This
SWWS event is a privileged opportunity to taste some of the
very best wines of South America's two top wine-making countries:
the Premium and Super-Premium red wines of Chile and Argentina.
Both Chile and Argentina have developed some top quality premium
red wines in recent years, and we have assembled a great selection
of some of these wines, many of which are very hard to find
here in Canada.
From
Chile comes several exciting cabernet based wines, including
such top scoring premium wines as the sought after carmenere/cabernet/syrah
blend from boutique winery Antiyal, Concha y Toro's flagship
reserve cabernet, Don Melchor, and the huge, massively extracted,
single vineyard cabernet from Domus Aurea.
|
From
Argentina comes some great Malbec based reds, that country's
top red varietal, and source of some of the most characterful
red wines anywhere. Taste the great Dedicado (cabernet/syrah/malbec)
from Finca Flichman and Weinert's classic Gran Vino (92 points
and also a cabernet/malbec/merlot blend), as well as a flight
of super premium single vineyard malbecs from Catena, Valdivieso
and Cadus.
These
flagship red wines of the highest reputation promise an extraordinary
evening with some of South America's greatest wines. |

The
Pinotage
tasting held on February
18, was a special experience, as most of the wines are not available
in Canada.
Dr. Hennie van Vuuren, Director of the B.C. Wine Research Centre
at UBC, gave us some great insights in the history of this
unique grape. Our favourite Pinotage wines of the evening were
1) L'Avenir Estate 1999 and 2) Kanonkop Estate 1998. Here
is the full tasting report.

The
SWWS Wine and Game dinner held on January 22 included great
food, great wines and interesting speakers. Tom Cox talked about
the wines, which ranged from South Africa, Chile, New Zealand and
Australia. The South African sparkling wine was a surprise and enjoyed
by many. Our guest speaker, Barbara-Jo McIntosh was unfortunately
taken ill the day of the event, however, Tony Peneff, also from
Books to Cooks, stepped up to the plate and gave a great overview
of some of the up and coming food trends as well as a recommended
reading list of six books if you were stranded on a desert island!
Here are the top books: 1) Encyclopedia of Grapes (Oz Clarke) 2)
History of Wine (Hugh Johnson) 3) Windows on the World Complete
Wine Course (Kevin Zraly) 4) Great Taste Made Simple (Andrea Immer)
5) Vines, Grapes and Wines (Jancis Robinson) 6) Dictionary of Wines;
All the French Wines from A-Z. |

The
Wine
& Cheese seminar
held on December 3rd was a tremendous experience.
Alice brought a wonderful selection of 15 cheeses (out of the 300
or some she has in stock), while Lance selected 6 beautiful wines
that were premium examples of their varietal. After a short introduction
on the wines, and cheeses we were each faced with the challenge
to find our favorite matches for white and red. This great experience
certainly got us started for the holiday season and I know that
many of us will pay Les Amis du Fromage a visit for an encore at
home among friends. Here
is the full report from Karl. |
