Super Premium Wines from Chile & Argentina, May 21, 2003 - SOLD OUT
With Paul Watkin

Finca Flichman, Argentina
This SWWS event is a privileged opportunity to taste some of the very best wines of South America's two top wine-making countries: the Premium and Super-Premium red wines of Chile and Argentina. Both Chile and Argentina have developed some top quality premium red wines in recent years, and we have assembled a great selection of some of these wines, many of which are very hard to find in Canada.

From Chile comes several exciting cabernet based wines, including such top scoring premium wines as the sought after carmenere/cabernet/syrah blend from boutique winery Antiyal (around $40 a bottle), Concha y Toro's flagship reserve cabernet, Don Melchior (about $50 a bottle), and the huge, massively extracted, single vineyard cabernet from Domus Aurea (around $70 a bottle!).
From Argentina we have some great Malbec based reds, which are that country's top red varietal, and source of some of the most characterful red wines anywhere. Taste the great Dedicado from Finca Flichman and Weinert's classic Gran Vino (92 points), as well as a flight of super premium single vineyard malbecs from Catena, Valdivieso and Cadus.

These flagship red wines of the highest reputation promise an extraordinary evening with some of South America's greatest wines. Not to be missed by serious red wine lovers!

Our speaker is wine educator and industry professional Paul Watkin. Paul brings nearly two decades of experience in the wine/hospitality trade. He has served as a fine dining room professional at renowned restaurants and hotels. He has acted as Beverage Program Manager and Wine List Consultant, as an Assistant Manager (for West Vancouver's Dundarave Wine Cellar), and Dining Room Manager and Service Instructor at the prestigious Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts.   The Pinot Noir tasting held on April 24 was quite unique as we sampled some top examples of Southern Hemisphere Pinot Noir in the first ever Southern Hemisphere Pinot Noir taste-off in Vancouver. We sourced prime examples of Pinot Noir to identify common traits and differences. Our speaker at this evening's tasting was James Nevison of HalfaGlass.com. He brought a unique, youthful perspective to the tastings. Our favourite Pinot Noir wines are: 1.Hamilton Russell 2001, SA, 2. Stonier Reserve 1998, Mornington Pen, Aus. Here is the full tasting report.

The Pinotage tasting held on February 18, was a special experience, as most of the wines are not available in Canada. Dr. Hennie van Vuuren, Director of the B.C. Wine Research Centre at UBC, gave us some great insights in the history of this unique grape. Our favourite Pinotage wines of the evening were 1) L'Avenir Estate 1999 and 2) Kanonkop Estate 1998. Here is the full tasting report.
